Sedus puts new state-of-the-art ‘Futura 2’ production line into operation
After a planning and construction period of approximately two years, Sedus has now commissioned the new ‘Futura 2’ production line at its Geseke site. Germany’s largest office furniture manufacturer is investing around EUR 21 million in the East Westphalian production site with the aim of securing production capacity for an expected growth in turnover. The new plant complements the existing state-of-the-art production line ‘Futura 1’ from 2012, which can be used to manufacture cabinet furniture from batch size 1 and according to individual customer requirements.
“The new production and storage halls in Geseke were completed in August 2022 and the new ‘Futura 2’ plant is now fully operational,” explains Daniel Werhahn, Managing Director of Sedus Systems GmbH. “The interaction between the Futura 1 and Futura 2 systems and the assembly departments is running smoothly. In total, Sedus has a capacity for 33,000 wooden components between the two plants, working a 5-day week with a possible 3-shift operation. And importantly, the new production line also reduces the workload of the Futura 1 plant and thus makes a decisive contribution to raising the adherence to delivery dates to Sedus’ usual target level in the face of the increased turnover of the last two years.”
All in all, Sedus is benefiting disproportionately from the market shift towards sustainably produced office furniture as well as home office furniture. Due to the demand-driven expansion of the product range, the existing production facilities at the Geseke site reached the limits of its capacity.
“With the new production line ‘Futura 2’, additional capacities are being built up to be able to meet workload peaks more quickly,” explains Daniel Kittner, spokesperson of the Board at Sedus Stoll AG. “The automated panel cutting process reduces throughput times and significantly speeds up production processes. A total of around 9,500 m² (100,00 sq feet) of extended production and storage halls have been built in Geseke over the last two years. This investment is the largest single investment in the history of Sedus Stoll AG.”
